Keywords are key terms or phrases that users are likely to type into a search engine to find your content. A meta description is a short summary of your page or post’s content.
Adding keywords and meta descriptions to your website can help Google better understand what your site is about. This leads to your website ranking better in search results, which means more traffic and more sales. As your audience grows, you have the opportunity to share your message with more people and grow your brand.
WordPress SEO plugins make it simple to add them to each post and page on your website from the WordPress admin area.
Are Keywords and Meta Descriptions SEO Ranking Factors?
Keyword and meta description is one of the SEO ranking factors used to include the word in the meta description of the URL. In today’s snippet optimization, the quality and relevance of the content of the description are far more important.
The meta description is a short summary of a webpage that is presented on the search engine results page (SERP). It is a short description of a web page that serves as a snippet preview of a web page.
It is a very important part of on-page SEO as the meta description forms an integral part of the search results page. In simple words, a meta description is the part of the webpage that users see before clicking on the URL.
Users will be more likely to click through and read your content if your meta description is compelling. We do know, however, that a high click-through rate indicates that Google will likely rank your content higher.
Instead, use your targeted keywords in your title, description, and throughout your content. This is why SEO plugins like Yoast include a true SEO score to assist you in optimizing your content for specific keywords and key phrases.

Now let’s see How to add Meta Description and Keywords to your WordPress Website
Step 1: Install Yoast SEO Plugin
Yoast SEO is the best, thus I highly suggest it. Don’t take my word for it; simply Google “best SEO plugins” to find out for yourself.
This plugin simplifies SEO settings and includes several important features such as multi-page and tabbed settings, giving it an advantage over its competitors. Furthermore, it makes it quite simple to change features such as the title and description, assisting you in climbing to the top of the search rankings.
You can also attempt Rank Math and All In One SEO in addition to Yoast SEO—the option is yours. However, in this section, I’ll teach you how to use Yoast SEO to add keywords and meta descriptions—but first, you must install it.
Step 2: Open your WordPress Dashboard
Open your WordPress Dashboard >> Click on plugins >> add new plugin >> Search for Yoast SEO >> Click on Install and Activate
Step 3: Add Keywords and Meta Description on Individual Blog post
All you have to do to add meta description to your current or new blog posts is open the WordPress blog post and click on edit post. When you scroll down, you’ll see a variety of possibilities.
You can go ahead and enter the term you’d like to rank for in the Focus Keyphrase section. This allows Yoast to thoroughly scan the content of your post in order to provide you with a content score. Once you’ve used the target term a sufficient number of times and in crucial areas of your posts, such as headers and post titles, you can raise your content score to green.
Let’s say I use the key phrase “how to start a blog” as an example. After scrolling down, I’m presented with a list of analysis results that I may read and apply to improve my current material.
Now, also type the same “how to start a blog” keyword to fill the meta description for your post.
Once you’ve submitted a good meta description that won’t be cut off in Google’s search results, your meta description bar will turn green. At the top, you can see a sample of what your meta description might look like.
When you write the meta description for your posts, you’re summarizing the content of your article. Make sure your description is as clear and converting visitors as possible so that when people find you through search engines, you get more clicks. This will assist you in achieving a higher ranking in search results.
Step 4: Add Keywords and Description in Your Pages
If you’ve used WordPress for a time, you’re familiar with the distinction between a page and a post. However, editing a page’s keywords and meta description is the same as updating your posts.
Similar to a post, you’ll want to open your chosen page from the Pages portion of your WordPress dashboard, go to the bottom, and discover the Yoast plugin places where you can fill in your keywords and meta descriptions.
Step 5: Add Keywords and Description in Your Home Page
To add keywords and a meta description to your website’s homepage, go to SEO >> Search Appearance >> General >> then Homepage, where you can fill in your Home page Title, meta description, and keywords.
Remember to be specific about the aim of your site and the services you provide when writing your homepage meta description. You should also naturally work in one or two core keywords. As a result, Google will be able to identify and rank your website appropriately.
Remember to hit Save Changes after you’ve edited your meta description.
Step 6: Add Keywords and Description in Categories
This is also the same as posts and pages you just need to Navigate to Posts >> then Categories, from your WordPress dashboard.
Now you can feel the category name, slug, and description.
When you go to the bottom of the page, you’ll notice the Yoast SEO plugin, which you can use to fill in the relevant keywords and meta descriptions, then select Update to preserve your changes.
Optimizing Keywords in Your articles using The Yoast Plugin
Now you’re all set to adding focus keywords and meta descriptions using the Yoast plugin.
Although the free Yoast SEO plugin is an excellent place to start, optimizing your website for keywords goes beyond that. Keywords should be sprinkled throughout your WordPress content to truly optimize it.
Here how to add are a few critical locations in your article where you can include keywords:
- Main Heading
- Between Content but don’t do Keyword Stuffing
- Meta Description
- Post URL(Slug)
- In Images ALT Tag
Including keywords and meta descriptions in your articles and pages will help you improve your on-page SEO. It’s simple to adjust your site’s keywords and meta descriptions with Yoast in a few simple steps.
