Many people are not paying attention to SEO-friendly URLs, there are very few articles on that and you know that if your URL is not SEO friendly then your ranking will also suffer.

No matter how hard you try, if your URL has keyword stuffing, stop word is used, your URL is not shortened, if all these problems are in your URL then your site will be affected badly.

Whenever a Google bot comes to your website, first of all, check the URL, if it is not correct and user-friendly then there can be a lot of problems in website ranking.

In this article, we are going to discuss the importance of structuring your URL and optimizing it for SEO. The structure of your URL can be a really important ranking factor, and it is something you need to take care of.

There are many things within your control that you can do to ensure that you get the best results for your website ranking.

What is a URL, and What is the Structure of URL, and Why is it Important for SEO?

A URL is also your universal resource locator, your website address, and all the other pages behind it. If your website was example.com, if you had a page about milk, it would be example.com/milk. This is your web URL.

You will have a URL for each page of your website, as well as those at the higher level of the homepage of your website.

How is this related to SEO?

Let’s break down some of the factors and ways to optimize your URLs, and what is the right structure for SEO-friendly URLs.

Optimize URL Structure

The first thing you can do to optimize your URL structure is to include your target keyword in your URL.

If you’re trying to rank what men’s black shoes sell for, having a page with that URL for that particular element or products you sell will really help optimize that page.

For example, you would have example.com/mens-black-shoes. This will really help your website rank, and more importantly, it gives a good indication to the user that they are going to the right place if they were looking at that website URL.

This is one of the most important ranking factors when it comes to SEO. If Google can’t see the subject matter in your URL, and another competitor’s URL contains the subject matter, you are at a distinct disadvantage.

Now, of course, this is not the only factor, but you should do everything within your power to optimize your keywords and your website.

This is an important factor.

 Avoid Dynamic Parameters

Another important thing, and it depends on how your website works, is to avoid using dynamic parameters.

Now, what do I mean by dynamic parameters? When your website has instructions to dynamically serve content via a URL, you see a dynamic parameter in a URL.

It often happens that you may see a question mark, or a URL with an equal sign, and then numbers, or similar things, that instruct the website browser to find that particular element.

This is something you should avoid at all costs, as dynamic parameters tend to cause a problem when optimizing your keywords.

The dynamic parameter, in itself, isn’t the biggest issue you’re going to worry about, and where you can solve it, you should solve the problem.

Really, the only downside to having dynamic parameters within your URL is that your URL will usually be longer, and the shorter your URL, the better.

The shorter your URL, the more useful it is to humans, and the more information you can give to Google.

It becomes very important.

Avoid Stop Words

The next thing to consider is that you should also avoid using what are known as stop words.

A stop word is a word within a URL that breaks off your keyword. Too often, you have a keyword and it doesn’t include a stop word.

If I type something like Marketing Agency in London, “in” would be the stop word, “Marketing Agency London” would be the keyword.

In your URL, you should go with a marketing agency in London as opposed to Marketing Agency in London. This is how a stop word works.

You should get rid of stop words, focus on keywords in your URL, as the stop word is going to add extra information, and it will also reduce your relevance a bit. Make sure to avoid using stop words where you can.

Limit Number of Folders

The next thing you should try to do is limit the number of folders and the hierarchy of your website.

Where necessary, limit it to as low as you can. What do I mean by that? What I mean is that every time you forward slash in a URL, you are going down one level in the hierarchy of your website.

You might have example.com/mens-sho-es/black-shoes/brogues. All these levels are going down on your website.

The more you have, the less important your URL becomes, the longer it becomes, the less interpretable it is by humans as well as search engines.

It will really help you cut down on the length if you reduce the number of hierarchies within your website.

You may not need as many hierarchies, you can bring things down the hierarchy level, and reduce the number of times you go to subfolders, because the more subfolders the more you get down the hierarchy, the less importance Google gives the page.

If you have a page posing as a competitor against whom you are visiting search results whose website is only one hierarchy down, for example, mensshoes.com/black-brogues, and you have menshoes2.com/ shoes /black/brogues-black-brogues A competitor’s website has a better chance than you at ranking by URL.

These factors become quite important. Give more importance to your website and your URLs by not pushing major pages too low in your hierarchy and going deeper into subfolders.

Always use Lowercase URLs

You also need to look at your case sensitivity. When I say case sensitivity, I mean that all your URLs should, generally, all go in lowercase.

Every so often, there are URLs where there are some uppercase words and lowercase words within the page.

Now, in some areas, this can cause problems, because if someone goes into their browser and types your URL, but it doesn’t have the correct casing of their word, they can go with a lowercase The URL contains an uppercase, and is designated as an uppercase, they probably encountered an error page because the website could not be found because they did not have the correct casing on their letters. This becomes a problem.

If you find that you have pages with lowercase and uppercase and it goes to 404 errors when you put wrong case sensitivity, you need to solve it.

In general, go with the lower case where you can, as it’s the default way people put URLs into browsers, and it’s a good way to make your URL structure clear and consistent.

Use Hyphen

Another thing to note is that, when separating keywords or words within your URL, the best way to do this is with a hyphen.

Now, many people sometimes associate words with each other, they may use different characters to separate their words, but generally speaking, a hyphen is the best way to do this.

This is why most CMS and content management systems actually use this as the default, when you start typing in your title, and you hit save on the page when you generate the URL, usually, all words will be separated by a hyphen. This is best practice.

This makes it easily readable for the user, and it also allows you to separate your keywords within your URL as opposed to running into each other.

Make sure you do the same.

Avoid Keyword Stuffing

Lastly, my last point is to do the thing you should always do when it comes to SEO, and that is to avoid keyword stuffing.

Don’t jam too many keywords into your URL, make sure they’re the same. Of course, mention your keyword in your URL, but don’t mention it too many times, don’t put lots of keywords in your URL.

It is spammy and will harm your website not only from Google’s point of view but also from the user’s point of view.

Again, keep your URLs short, keep them on point, and keep them focused as well. This is really important.
